Amazon India won’t be returning smartphones sold on or after 7th February 2015. The company will now only replace defective and damaged handsets reported within first 10 days after the order has been received.

If you don’t already know this, Amazon India used to issue full no-questions-asked refunds for items you had purchased within first 12 days. Entire amount, including the extra you paid for one day or two day delivery was credited to your account within a couple of days.

The official announcement regarding these changes in return policy state:

“All Mobile phones that are fulfilled by Amazon, purchased on or after 7th February 2016, will have a replacement only policy. Mobile phone items that are fulfilled by Amazon will no longer be eligible for refunds. In case you have received a defective or a damaged mobile phone, you will be eligible for a free replacement.”

2016-02-08_124319To ensure that new consumers don’t miss the fine print warning, the message is loud and clear on all mobile related pages on Amazon.in for now.

Obviously the reason for the change is consumers exploiting Amazon’s generous returns. Previous return policy was also something which made Amazon stand out as more reassuring market-place than Flipkart and Snapdeal (or perhaps even offline markets). However, it wasn’t very sustainable and had to go.

Amazon’s return policy will still be applicable on other electronic products. You can visit the official page to know precise details.
