For anyone religiously keeping tabs on smartphone technology, it should be quite clear that budget smartphones almost never deliver on their promise of spectacular camera performance or breathtaking premium design. However, one thing they are increasingly getting good at is cramming in mammoth capacity batteries, consequently resulting in extended charge cycles.

On the other hand, the slim and svelte premium tier-1 flagships of this age don’t have this luxury, for the added heft and waist line would certainly invite a global backlash, and perhaps rob them of the deluxe feel that high-end consumers are simply ( and understandably) not willing to compromise on.

Riding on this void, the market for big battery phones is indeed thriving as is evident from companies incessantly churning out Max, Power and Marathon series phones. Moving forward, smartphone manufacturers are now trying to replicate this success in a pricier upper mid-range segment.

Gionee goes the proverbial extra mile with its upcoming M2017 and adds in a whopping 7000mAh battery. The high capacity might be a result of combining two batteries as was the case with Gionee Marathon M5.

That’s not all superfluous power, though. A power hungry 5.7-inch 2K display and MediaTek SoC aided with 6GB RAM  will be leeching on all that extra juice in the tank, which would probably justify its existence in the first place.

Other known features include 128GB internal storage, dual 13MP + 12MP rear camera sensors with dual LED flash, and a fingerprint sensor on the front integrated with the home button.

Let’s see if Gionee manages to keep the weight and thickness within reasonable bounds.

What would you personally prefer? A big battery or a medium capacity one with superfast charging?
