Google Play store will now have a Made for India section for apps specially optimized for the Indian audience. This is the next one of many steps Google has taken over the last few years to fine tune its services for the Indian smartphone market.

The program aims to motivate developers to make software that works well on the kind of hardware most Indian smartphone users have access to. Developers can apply at g.co/play/madeforindia and, if they qualify, have their apps get more visibility by being showcased in a special India section.

Addressing the first ever App Excellence Summit in India, Purnima Kochikar, Director, Business Development, Games & Applications, Google Play said, “At Google Play, we are committed to helping Indian developers of all sizes seize this opportunity and build successful, locally relevant businesses.  A lot of what we do at Google Play is support developers’ imaginations and make Android consumers aware of the amazing new experiences our developers are creating.”

Attendees at App Excellence Submit also got a chance to attend skill-building consultation sessions with Googlers, and visit demo booths to learn more about the latest features and products that Google has to offer the developer community.

But, why is Google particularly interested in India?

Most Indian consumers access the internet using their Android smartphones. These consumers also download more than a billion apps every month. More over, the number of app installs has grown at a staggering rate of 150 percent every year. Even the money that Indian consumers spend on Apps has tripled in the last year.

Besides, India is where Google will get its next Billion users. There are still a huge number of consumers who use feature phones and don’t have internet access.
