Google to Release First Android P developer Preview Later This Month

UPDATE: Google has released its first developer preview built of Android P. If you are a developer you can download from here.  

Android P is coming really soon. Well, if renowned tipster Evan Blass is to be believed that Google will Android P first release developer preview by mid-March. He hasn’t mentioned the exact date but if we look back, Google released Android Oreo’s first developer preview on March 21 last year. If this leak turns out to be true, it will give us some ideas on what features we should expect from Android P once Google goes official with the next version of Android.

After first few preview versions, Google is expected to officially announce the Android P (and what P really stands for) at its annual developers conference which is scheduled to start on May 8. Traditionally, Google flavours each version of Android with some desert name, therefore, speculations have started kicking in on what could possibly the Android 9.0 official name. Some wild guesses which are making rounds in tech circles are Pie, maybe Pumpkin Pie or Pecan Pie.

As of now, not much information related to Android P and its expected features is known. of-late, a few reports pop up suggesting that Android P won’t allow idle apps from accessing camera or mic. Some reports also suggest Android P will come with enhanced call blocking feature and call recording tone to discourage lawfully call recordings. Google could also introduce native iris scanner support.

Last month, Bloomberg reported that Google will add support for Apple’s iPhone X like notch display in Android 9.0. Nonetheless, players like Asus and Essential have already launched a notch display phone while Vivo and Oppo are reportedly working on notch display for their V9 and R15 respectively. Huawei upcoming flagship P20 is also expected to boast a notch display.
