Infinix, a nascent brand in India on its way up, seems to be building a reputation for delivering entertainment-centric smartphones. The Infinix Note 4 had a bigger than usual display and battery in its class and the now the new Flagship, Infinix Zero 5, will be replicating the same formula albeit at a higher price point.

On the face of it, the Infinix Zero 5 has a sharp big display, massive battery, dual-camera with optical zoom, premium metal design, and bigger RAM – all for just Rs. 17,999.

But, do all these marketing-adjectives quantify as splendid real world performance? That’s the question we will be answering in our Infinix Zero 5 detailed review that follows.

Infinix Zero 5 Design and Build Quality Review

The Infinix Zero 5 has nothing compact about it. There is an extra-large (16:9) 5.98-inch display up front that stretches the phone’s size to a phablet. But Infinix has done a fine job by still keeping the Zero 5 slim, sleek and comfortable to hold.

The phone flaunts a metal unibody design with chamfered edges that feels elegant to us. The smooth finish at the back gives you an excellent grip over the phone and prevents metal back from being a fingerprint magnet. The camera sensors embedded underneath a plastic trimming also look appealing.

All the physical buttons on the right edge of the phone and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor are within the range. However, this isn’t a one-hand usage phone. You will surely have to use two hands very frequently.

The Infinix Zero 5 is also a tad heavy, but that’s primarily because of the large battery it houses within. All the external ports like the USB Type-C, audio jack are on the bottom edge along with loud and immersive speakers.

All in all, Infinix Zero 5 does a pretty decent job on the design front. The swanky design, sturdy body, and availability of the handset in different hues – Sandstone Black, Champagne Gold, and Bordeaux Red- all work in its favour.

Infinix Zero 5 Display Review

As we have already stressed before, the Zero 5 has a large 5.98-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixel) screen. The display quality is very good and you can enjoy crisp and sharp content in vibrant colors, and also the brightness level of the display is good enough to be viewed in any lighting condition.

However, the broad bezels around the display could be a bit disappointing at this point in time when full-view panels are increasingly becoming common. But if we leave that part out, the Zero 5 has a display, which is one of the better displays you can get at this price.

Infinix Zero 5 Performace and Software Review

Under the hood, the Infinix Zero 5 performance is helped by a decent octa-core Helio P25 processor clocked at a frequency of 2.45 GHz. Holding the edge for the processor is the ultra-fast 6GB RAM (with the latest LPDDR4X architecture) and 64GB storage space.

The real-time performance of the phone is up to the mark and the Zero 5 is capable enough to handle everything you throw at it. For the review, we tested the device with heavy gaming like Asphalt 8 and Modern Combat 5, multitasking and video streaming, and to our surprise, the phone remained cool most of the time, the processing was fast, and there was no lags or interruption involved.

At the software front, the Infinix Zero 5 runs on the Android 7.0 Nougat with custom XOS 3.0 Hummingbird UI, garnished on top. The company has promised one android upgrade and it’ll most likely be Android Oreo. The interface is nowhere near stock Android, but it isn’t a bad ROM either.

It is well optimized and offers extensive gesture support like the one-handed mode and flexible split-screen, and is quite simple and easy to navigate through. XOS also packs some privacy features that let you password protect apps/remotely delete your phone’s data, as well as apps like Freezer that essentially offloads apps you don’t want to use without having to delete them.

Infinix Zero 5 Camera and Battery Review

The camera on Infinix Zero 5 looks promising on paper. It has dual-rear cameras – 12MP wide angle sensor + 13MP telephoto lens, with features like Optical Zoom, Portrait mode, and Professional mode. Upfront, it has a 16MP sensor with Selfie flash that can also shoot images with blurred background.

The end result is not entirely convincing but isn’t disappointing either. The shots captured from the aforementioned sensors in broad daylight are enriched with a good amount of details and colors but the phone struggles in low-light ambiance. The rear cameras also feature 2x optical zoom, which does a decent job in focusing on the subject, but again it needs a good lighting environment to capture workable zoom shots.

The dual-cameras also power the portrait mode in the Infinix Zero 5. Unfortunately, the portrait mode doesn’t work as it should.

As was the case in Infinix budget smartphones, the Zero 5 also has a great selfie camera. The images clicked by the 16MP front camera show good metering and plenty details. The night-life selfie experience of the phone is also good but images do have visible noise.

The smartphone is backed by a massive 4350mAh battery with Xcharge fast charging support. The battery backup is superb – it can last whole day from moderate to heavy usage and, over a couple of weeks of usage, we were able to consistently hit bedtime with 20 to 30 percent battery to spare.

On particular heavy usage days, you can also intermittently use the Ultra Power mode, to turn off all battery draining apps and processes.

Infinix Zero 5 Review – Should You Buy It?

For a start, the Infinix Zero 5 is a decent smartphone in the mid-range segment. The big-display, solid built quality and excellent battery performance works in favor of the phone. But, at the same time, it has its peeve points too like the broad bezels around the display, eccentric interface, and average camera performance.

Its only clear big-display competitor is the Mi Max 2, and it can indeed hold its ground well against the aging Xiaomi alternative. We can recommend Infinix Zero 5 to anyone who’s looking for extra screen real estate and wants a phone with a really long-lasting battery.
