Design and Build

Both phones flaunt a metal body and look attractive. Xiaomi Mi A1 takes design cues from, say, OnePlus 5 and iPhone 7 (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). It’s slim, elegant has dual cameras placed in the top right corner and has U-shaped antenna bands.

On the other hand, the Moto G5s Plus is a tad thicker (7.3mm vs 8mm) and has a huge camera bump which you will need to even out with a thick case. Having said that, it isn’t a bad looking phone either. And it has the advantage of looking unique.

Another thing to consider is the fingerprint sensor placement. The Moto G5s Plus has it on the front and the Mi A1 has it mounted on the rear. Which one you’d be more comfortable is a matter of personal taste.

Comparing the two, in terms of design and handling, we are inclined to side with the Mi A1.

Display

Both phones include 5.5-inch Full HD displays, but the one on the Moto G5s Plus is better in terms of quality. Comparing the two panels, the one on Moto G5s Plus has better color contrast and dynamic range. The one on Mi A1 has a less reflective touch glass, though. Out of the two, we’d rate Moto G5s Plus’s display better.

Performance and Software

There isn’t much to choose from between the two in this regards. Both phones are powered by the same chipset and are running well-optimized stock Android software. Motorola bundles a few trinkets of its own – Moto gestures, one hand mode, ambient display, etc. – that prove to be useful.

On the other hand, the Mi A1 software will be handled directly by Google and thus it’s likely to be updated to Android Oreo faster.

Camera and Battery

This is where you’d see a well-pronounced difference between the two.

The Mi A1 uses a telephoto lens on the second sensor for optical zoom. The phone includes two 12MP sensors with 26mm, f/2.2 aperture, and 50mm, f/2.6 aperture, Lenses respectively. Together, the two can zoom in on subjects without losing details.

The Moto G5s Plus uses two 13MP sensors, one color, and one monochrome, to gather more light in order to enhance low light shots.

Both phones also have portrait modes (background blur) but the one on the Mi A1 is way better than the one on Moto G5s Plus.

Xiaomi Mi A1

The singular cameras on both phones can capture great shots in good light and reasonable ones in low light. Both phones support 4K videos and slow motion video capture as well. But as far as dual camera prowess goes, the Mi A1 has more to offer. Moto G5s Plus will have to catch up with software updates.

As for the battery, both phones have similar capacities, and can comfortably last for one day of moderate to heavy usage.

Verdict

Both the Moto G5s Plus and Xiaomi Mi A1 push the envelope that has been defining and limiting budget smartphones. Both phones have a full metal design, powerful chipset, reasonable cameras, and stock Android software. But there still are things you need to choose between.

Who should buy Xiaomi Mi A1

Xiaomi’s first stock Android Phone has the advantage of being slimmer and sleeker. Any one who’s particularly taken in by dual cameras will get more fulfillment from the Mi A1. And Google handling software updates is a big plus point too (Android Oreo and Android P update promised, time security patches updates). And it’s also 1000 INR cheaper.

Who should buy Moto G5s Plus

Moto G5s Plus’s biggest advantage over Mi A1 is its better display. It’ll also appeal to people are frustrated by Mi A1 being perennially out of stock.
