nexus-6p-1Ever since, Google showcased Nexus 6P at San Francisco event, there has been a lot of curiosity among the tech buffs about the big black glass bar on the rear side. It did feel like an unnecessary trade-off or perhaps a bad design decision but ultimately made no sense. Experts came to different conclusions on biggest ever Nexus phone eyesore, but nothing was certain. Well, all the fuzz about glass bar can now settle down, as the exact details have arrived.
The Big black glass bar in Nexus 6P covers NFC and other antennas. The Huawei-made Nexus carries an exterior body made of aluminum, which sometimes creates trouble for radio and other wireless signals to get through. Therefore, the clever designers at Google and Huawei decided to place NFC coil, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and mobile data connectivity antenna under this black glass bar. This also houses the 12.3 MP rear camera along with the dual LED flash and laser-guided autofocus setup.

It is not the first time that a smartphone maker has used this design approach. Lenovo used similar glass strips in Vive Z2 Pro. Full metal body phone makers like Samsung, HTC and Apple have accomplished the same result by using ceramic or plastic inserts in their metal made phones.

It would interesting to note quality of radio signal reception in Nexus 6P and if this really makes a noticeable difference. If it does better than other aluminum made phones, then other makers could head on a similar pathway.
