Finish smartphone manufacturer HMD Global hosted an event today to take the wraps off its latest Nokia 2. The entry segment phone falls right below Nokia 3 in the hierarchy and in terms of specifications.

It is the cheapest smartphone from Nokia phone with a price tag of just Euro 99 or around Rs. 7,499. With this phone, Nokia is clearly looking to penetrate in the market which so far this year has been dominated by Xiaomi with its Redmi 4A and Redmi 4. The Redmi siblings have been a remarkable success story for the company as they have made Xioami a household name today.

HMD Global’s latest offering will also face fierce competition from Xiaomi phones especially Redmi 4A. Keeping that in mind, we decided to pit Nokia 2 against Xiaomi Redmi 4A for a specs comparison to find out where it stands against current crowd puller.

Design and Display

Both these budget smartphones are aesthetically appealing to the eye but Nokia 2 does have an upper hand. The Nokia 2 boasts of a series 6000 aluminum frame with a polycarbonate back and Gorilla Glass 3 on front. HMD Global had a lot to say about the Nokia 2 display and it certainly seems impressive in the first impression. The 720P HD LTPS display is vivid, sharp and appears to have high contrast. Though, it is a tad reflective in nature.

Xiaomi Redmi 4A, on the other hand, is purely made of polycarbonate which is not cheap but certainly not as classy as the combination of Glass, Metal, and Polycarbonate in Nokia 2. The Redmi 4A too packs a 720P IPS LCD HD display is certainly sharp and has good contrast ratio. However, it has a tendency to lean towards colder hues ever so slightly and it attracts a lot of fingerprints.

Performance and Software

When it comes to performance Xiaomi Redmi 4A is clearly better equipped and can handle a lot more without breaking a sweat. The biggest plus point for the Redmi 4A is the Snapdragon 425 chipset which is packed under its hood. Xiaomi further complements it with 2GB RAM and 16GB/32GB internal storage. It manages to play graphics intensive games and apps without losing its shape. it comes running on MIUI 8 which is a heavily customized version of Android 7.1 Nougat.

On the contrary, the Nokia 2 is clearly underpowered as it rocks Snapdragon 212 chipset ticking at 1.3GHz. Biggest let down is the lack of storage space and memory. HMD Global is offering the Nokia 2 with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage which is clearly not enough in 2017. Having said that, Nokia 2 snaps back in software arena as it is running on bloatware free Stock Android and guarantees monthly software update and Android Oreo upgrade.

Camera, Battery, and Connectivity

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A apparently has better optics on paper. It comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera which is supported by PDAF, 5-lens system, f/2.2 aperture and LED flash. Up front, there is a 5-megapixel selfie sensor with f/2.2 aperture.

Nokia 2, optics-wise, loses to Redmi 4A on megapixel count as it comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. Still, we can’t really come to a conclusion on optics performance as it requires testing in various conditions.

On the battery front, there is hardly anything to choose as both of them comes with 4000+ mAh battery which should last at least 1.5days. Nokia on record claimed that its battery will 2 days on a single full charge.

In terms of connectivity, both of them support 4G VoLTE, WIFI, GPS, and Bluetooth.
