The newly harvested Nokia phones from HMD Global – Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco – have arrived in the Indian market. All the three are pure Android phones with Nokia 6 (2018) being the most affordable. It will retail for Rs. 16,999 on Amazon.in and other select retail stores, which is also exactly same as what you’d have to pay for the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

Which one would it rather be?

We decided to pit the two mid-range devices against each other to figure out the ultimate winner. Here’s what we found out:

Design and Build Quality

The Nokia 6 (2018) surely doesn’t fall short when it comes to style, thanks to its beautiful Aluminum body. It has chamfered edges and 2.5D curved Corning Gorilla Glass, up front, just like last year’s Nokia 6. However, HMD Global did tweak the design of Nokia 6 (2018) by using bold color accents on phone’s edges as well as a camera module and fingerprint sensor.

In comparison to this, the Redmi Note 5 Pro design seems to be very ho-hum. Design still doesn’t seem to be a priority for Xiaomi. Its chassis is built from plastic strips at the top and bottom and a metal plate in the center that tapers to the edges. Moreover, it has a trendier 18:9 display up front, something users will find hard to look past in the Nokia 6 (2018).

Both phones have a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, on-screen navigational buttons, and volume rocker and power button on the right corner of the phone.

All said than done, it is the Nokia 6 (2018) that has a more enticing look and attractive design. But, if you are looking for a phone with all modern traits then Redmi Note 5 Pro is the one to go.

Display

At the display front, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has an advantage over Nokia 6 (2018) for sporting a full vision panel. The Xiaomi device boasts an almost bezel-less 5.9-inch 18:9 FHD+ display whereas its nemesis features a standard 16:9 ratio 5.5-inch FHD display surrounded by thick bezels.

Both are IPS LCD displays, which means that they have similar properties. We do find the Nokia 6 panel to be slightly better calibrated, but most common users would be hardpressed to notice any difference.

Performance and Software

Under the hood, the Nokia 6 (2018) is powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor mated with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and 128GB expandable storage.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, rocks the latest Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 636 chipset. It is paired up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, which can be expanded up to 128GB.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro clearly has a performance advantage over Nokia 6 (2018). The Nokia 6 still has a reasonably powerful chipset that should suffice for most people, but the Redmi Note 5 Pro is simply better equipped in this regards.

As for the software, the Nokia 8 (2018) is an Android One phone that comes running on stock-Android Oreo out of the box. Whereas the Redmi Note 5 Pro comes running on Xiaomi’s MIUI 9 UI on top of dated Android Nougat. If you ask us, we would rate the stock-Android and prospect of timely updates above Xiaomi’s custom UI.

Camera and Battery

This is another area where the Redmi Note 5 Pro beats the Nokia 6 (2018) hands down. The Note 5 Pro sports a dual 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel primary camera with f/2.2 aperture lens and LED flash. The extra sensor means that you can click images with depth effect. For selfies, it has a 20MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture lens.

The Nokia 6 (2018) is touted to come with 16-megapixel Zeiss optics in the primary camera and an 8-megapixel secondary camera. Both have f/2.0 aperture lens and can click images with great details in bright conditions. We still have to test the phone in our space to give a final verdict on the cameras.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro sports a massive 4000mAh battery that can easily outlast that of Nokia 6 (2018) mediocre 3000mAh battery. But the Nokia battery has the advantage here by supporting fast charge.

Verdict

The two phones are quite exciting but its hard to deny that the Redmi Note 5 Pro has a sizeable lead.

Who Should Buy Nokia 6 (2018)?

The Nokia 6 (2018) will certainly attract fashionista and all those people who love pure Android phone coupled with a decent processor, and good enough camera performance.

Who Should Buy Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro?

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, is a phone that accommodates all the contemporaries trends of a smartphone. It has an 18:9 display, latest chipset, dual-rear camera, and a good selfie camera. If you are comfortable with MIUI and with buying from online stores, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is a better option. The only issue is that you will need the power of the old and new gods to add one to your card.
