Design, Build, and Display

Question: How is the OnePlus 3 design?

Answer: Unlike the original OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, this third generation smartphone uses metal which has unofficially become the industry standard for flagships in 2016. The OnePlus 3 is the slimmest and lightest smartphone offered by Carl Pei and his team so far. It looks great in hands and feels even better. Curved edges at the back, slim waistline, and 2.5D curved glass add up to be pleasing to the eyes. However, it is a bit slippery, so you have to shell out a bit more and buy a back cover.

Front of the phone is dominated by a 5.5-inch display, two capacitive buttons and a home button with a fingerprint sensor embedded in it. On the right, there is a power button and dual SIM slot. On the left, there is volume rocker and a slider to toggle between all notifications, priority notifications, and silent mode. Hardware keys give good tactile feedback. I wish I could say the same for notification slider. Its placement is fine but the effort one has to put in to maneuver it makes it a bit uncomfortable to use.

Question: OnePlus 3 has capacitive keys or on-screen navigation buttons?

Answer:  By default, OnePlus 3 comes with capacitive keys. But Oxygen OS offers an option to turn on the on-screen buttons as well. The unintrusive, dot-like capacitive keys flanking the home button are backlit.

Question: How is the display of OnePlus 3?

Answer: Just like the X, the OP 3 also incorporates Samsung’s AMOLED display for its 2016 flagship. The OnePlus 3 AMOLED screen targets NTSC colors mode by default which should be the way most people would like it.

OnePlus later added an sRGB mode (under developer options) via an OTA update which is more accurate. While switching to sRGB mode for the first time, you will find it unnaturally yellow (that’s only because our eyes are now accustomed to blue-tinged whites). We recommend to keep using it nonetheless and after a few hours, you will find it to be a lot better than the original blue-ish display. It will be a lot less harsh on your eyes as well.

OnePlus sticks to the Full HD display resolution, but since it’s a pentile display, it doesn’t appear as crisp as the QHD panels or the best 1080p IPS LCD panels that we have seen.

If you are not the way to picky about your smartphone display, you will like the display on the OnePlus 3.

Question: How is the outdoor visibility? Does the OnePlus 3 has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: Outdoor visibility is good. Adaptive brightness option under display also works well.

Question: Does the OnePlus 3 display has Gorilla glass protection?

This time, OnePlus has optimized its software well to take the advantage of the hardware which is certainly visible in the phone’s performance. Everything runs buttery smooth without any perceivable lag.

The gaming experience on the OnePlus 3 won’t disappoint you. It handles intensely graphic and taxing games such as Nova 3, Overkill 3, Asphalt 8 with ease. Maneuvering during gameplay was smooth. At the time of launch, there were some heating issues on the phone, but OnePlus pushed an OTA update to enable CPU throttling. For now, it’s running cool. Maximum temperature we recorded was 40 degrees.
