Optics have since long been one of the most trusted and dependable selling points for smartphones. So, it is no surprise that some companies (Read: Oppo and Vivo) have successfully persisted with the camera-centric marketing and, in the process, have reaped handsome rewards.

Vivo recently brought out its V5 Plus (Review) smartphone that featured a dual camera unit up front, making the phone first from Vivo’s factory to do so. Now, Oppo levels with its F3 Plus handset that too uses dual snappers up front, but with a slightly different approach.

Now, we all love a selfie, don’t we?

We decided to address the proverbial elephant in the room and pitted the two against each other. Let’s help you decide between the Vivo V5 Plus and Oppo F3 Plus.

On paper, this is what the two phones appear like:

Design and Display

As far as the display is concerned, both the phones are poles apart with only the resolution (1080x1920p) common among them.

Physically, the F3 Plus, with a 6-inch display, towers above the much shorter V5 Plus (5.5-inch), also having a much larger screen to body ratio (F3 Plus’ 80.3% compared to V5 Plus’ 73.8%).Vivo V5 Plus, review, Price In India and specificaion (1)

However, the results are reversed when the Pixels Per Inch (ppi) densities are equated. The V5 Plus offers almost 401 ppi density and is clearly sharper than the F3 Plus, which has around 367 ppi density to offer.

If you have a quick glance at both the phones, you’d (at first) be reminded of Apple’s iPhones, for the duo pay an ode to them in some way or the other, on the design front.

Both come in a full metallic body and offer a very comfortable feel. There are chamfered edges in tow for both them and the case, obviously, is one of personal preference, rather than depending on a (presumably biased) opinion.

You may like a bigger phone better or may have an inclination towards a more compact one. Then again, it is all up to you. But in our opinion, 6-inches is way too big for selfie-centric phones.

Performance

This is where the individuality between the duplet begins to show up, as barring the number of cores working together (8 being the magic number here) to keep them buzzing, OS (up to a certain extent) and RAM, almost nothing can be equated.

It is pretty evident that the F3 Plus does, in fact, edge out the V5 Plus in the chipset (Snapdragon 653 to Snapdragon 625) segment.

The two quartets (4×1.95GHz and 4×1.44Ghz) work along real fine and thereby generate greater raw power (although greater power normally leads to compromise on the battery front). Thrust in an Adreno 510 GPU with the processor and you can clearly see how the F3 Plus is a tad bit ahead in the power game.

For the V5 Plus, we have a Snapdragon 625 SoC, with its collection of cores clocking in a maximum frequency of 2.0Ghz, with an Adreno 506 GPU giving it company.

Now, it’s not a secret anymore that the Snapdragon 625 chipset is one which is considerably more power efficient, particularly when compared to the Snapdragon 653 (a difference of about 30%).

All in all, the following two statements would suffice for analyzing the performance of the pair:

If you are someone who ranks performance at the top of the priority list, you’ll find the F3 Plus fitting the bill. If you are someone looking for a phone to ease up on the battery and balance power consumption too, the V5 Plus may very well be your calling.

And if you are a basic or a moderate user, you will find both fully capable of handling all your demands with perfect ease.

Camera

There is a neck and neck competition between the two phones, as far as the optics are concerned. Remember we are talking about two companies which refer to optics even in their respective taglines!

Naturally, the camera game has to be strong in here, doesn’t it? And it is.

Both the phones are debutantes for their respective makers in the context of featuring two cameras up front. Each one scores pretty high in the front camera department, banking on the bokeh mode to bring about pretty evident changes/improvements.

The phones have almost the same primary sensors (20MP and 16MP for the V5 Plus and F3 Plus respectively) and a common secondary sensor of 8MP.

On the rear, both have a 16MP single unit with a slight difference in the aperture(s) being the only noteworthy dissimilarity.

Oppo uses the second camera to help you fit more in each selfie frame. The dual cameras enable F3 Plus to shoot 120-degree wide angle selfies with great details and very little distortion.  The Vivo V5 Plus, on the other hand uses the second camera to add bokeh effects and to make your selfie objects pop.

So, the F3 Plus is better for clicking group selfies and makes a difference to selfies clicked in landscape mode, and the Vivo V5 Plus embellishes regular selfies by adding shallow depth of field effect.

For low-light selfies, Vivo V5 Plus has its ‘Moonlight’ fill flash and the F3 Plus relies on screen flash. Neither of the two can fully salvage low-light selfies.

Battery

Both the V5 Plus and the F3 Plus employ batteries of similar make and build. Both the power units that feature inside the phones are Li-ion ones that come with fast charging capabilities. Oppo’s VOOC charging, however, is definitely faster. The Oppo F3 Plus also lasts comparatively longer on a full charge, thanks to its bigger battery capacity (4000mAh vs 3160mAh).

Final Verdict

Both the phones are the first of their kind (from their companies) and manage to keep up to their billed USPs as well.

Mostly similar, we found the graph to be even-stevens after a thorough look across all the features. That being said, there is still some difference that we were able to make out and our final assessment stands as:

If you often find yourself (and detest) working hard to squeeze people into a selfie frame, AND if you are charmed by gigantic display phones, go for the Oppo F3 Plus. Otherwise, the more compact and relatively more manageable Vivo V5 Plus that can shoot charming selfies with blurred backdrops should work better for you.
