Further pushing the paddle on its IoT game, Qualcomm introduced two new chipsets – Snapdragon 600E and 410E – for ‘industrial’ applications. The renowned Application Processor manufacturer has been steadily strengthening its hold on Internet of Things (IoT) market. It now enjoys a dominant position in the space and holds the most and some of the most valuable patents in the field.
While wearable technology is still struggling to justify its existence, smart connected home devices and appliances already make a lot of sense. To have a clear cut edge when the market finally starts exploding, Qualcomm is weaving a complete ecosystem. Recently, Qualcomm and Ericsson teamed up with other prominent firms to form a consortium to jointly license IoT patents, named Avanci.
Coming back to the chipsets launched today, The Snapdragon 610 offers 4 Krait 300 cores clocked at 1.5GHz, Adreno 320 GPU, digital signal processor, Bluetooth (4.0, Low Energy, and 3.x), Wi-Fi up to 802.11ac, and GPS.
On the other hand, the Snapdragon 410e includes 4 cores clocked at 1.2GHz, Adreno 320 GPU, digital signal processor, Bluetooth (4.0, Low Energy, and 3.x), Wi-Fi up to 802.11ac, and GPS.
The Snapdragon 610e is suited for devices with Storage and HDMI connectivity, and the 410e will be used in single purpose applications like Smart Homes, medical equipment, etc. Both chips area compatible with Qualcomm’s DragonBoard 410c development motherboard, which means manufacturers won’t have much trouble integrating them in future devices.
So, how big is IoT market? According to McKinsey report, the number of connected devices are expected to grow from 8.5 billion in 2013 to approximately 28 billion in 2020. Qualcomm prudent approach will help it grab the lion’s share of this growth.

“Snapdragon is a powerful and versatile processor with many potential applications in a wide variety of IoT applications and we can now offer this technology to a much wider range of customers with the additional benefit of long-term support and availability.”
