In an attempt to expand its reach to every nook and corner of Bharat, India’s biggest consumer durable company, Samsung, today added an unprecedented 1000+ new service points which include 250 new service points, 250 resident engineers (who will independently service in remote areas) and 535 service vans.

These service vans are fully equipped and are classified in two categories. There will be a separate service Van for mobile phones and portable gadgets, and a separate unit for all other Samsung products. Samsung believes that this new initiative will reduce turn-around-time and help it address the plight of rural consumers for whom carrying a product to a service center is just not an option.

Samsung’s initiative looks like a great start, but its efficacy will only be determined after a period of time.

Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Minister of Rural Development, Government of India said, “As digitization and electrification expands into rural India, we are witnessing an increase in the adoption of electronics and mobile products. It is imperative for corporations to support this trend by establishing quality service network for addressing consumers’ needs regarding after-sales service of products in rural areas.”

Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State for Tourism & Culture, Government of India said, “Samsung’s manufacturing plant, two R&D centers and its design center are contributing in a big way to the economy and technology prowess of Noida and in effect Uttar Pradesh and the nation as well. Corporations that participate in the government’s focus on rural India, whether in product or services, will stand to gain rural consumers’ trust in the long run.”

This might mark a paradigm shift as to how consumers are serviced. In a country where the majority population resides in rural areas, mobile service vans could definitely help. With the added service points Samsung expands its reach to 6000 talukas spanning 29 Indian states.

Besides, since the rural India will be the next growth driver, this gives Samsung an opportunity to access a vast untapped market.
