Both phones are premium mid-range phones that aim to offer a holistic experience with minimal compromises. But which one would you choose? Let’s try and simplify the choice by stacking the two against each other.

Design and Build

The Samsung Galaxy A8+ takes some design cues from the S-series. It includes a glass on front and rear, an Infinity display, dual selfie cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It is also IP68 water and dust resistant.

On the other hand, the Honor View 10 has a premium metal unibody design with full vision display. Huawei’s offering is slimmer which works in its favor. Huawei has managed to make room for the fingerprint sensor on the front, but due to the overall full-view ergonomics, the sensor isn’t as comfortably accessible as you’d expect from a front mounted one.

Both phones look extremely premium and you can’t go wrong with either of the two, but the Honor View 10 has a slight edge here.

Display

Up front, both phones have the same 18:9 Full HD+ display panel, but with dissimilar properties.

The View 10 has a 5.99-inch IPS LCD display, which is not necessarily bad if looked individually – the IPS LCD panel can give you a sharper picture and wide viewing angles. But, when compared with Galaxy A8+ 6-inch SAMOLED display, the View 10 looks quite nominal. Samsung indeed has an AMOLED advantage here.

Performance and Software

Both smartphones feature powerful internal hardware. The Galaxy A8+ employs Exynos 7885 mobile chipset paired with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage space. The phone also offers a dedicated microSD card slot to expand the memory up to 256GB.

In the similar context, the Honor View 10 is powered by Kirin 970 processor supported by 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. Honor also claims that its chipset is AI-supportive, which learns from your usability to deliver better results and not let your phone slow down over time. The feature sounds promising yet it is too soon to say anything on that. Performance-wise Honor View 10 does seem to have a hardware advantage. As for the software, both handsets use their own custom skins on top of Android. While Galaxy A8+ comes running on Android Nougat-based Experience 8.5, the View 10 rocks Android Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 out of the box. The selection here depends on your taste and usability, but in our opinion, Samsung’s software is a lot more mature and intuitive.

Honor View 10 is faster but when you view the overall experience, the Galaxy A8+ impresses more simply beacuse of its software experience.

Camera and Battery

The Galaxy A8+ is Samsung’s first dual-front camera smartphone. It has a 16MP primary front camera and an extra 8MP sensor that comes handy for a group selfie, each with wide f/1.9 aperture lens. The dual-camera also comes with the live focus that blurs the background to click portrait images. The rear camera on Galaxy A8+ is a 16MP sensor with wide f/1.7 aperture lens.

Whereas the Honor View 10 combines a 20MP monochrome and a 16MP color sensor, each with f/1.8 aperture lens, and that helps it deliver better details. On the front, it has a 16MP sensor with f/1.7 aperture lens.

The Galaxy A8+ has a significantly better selfie camera that can shoot impressive portrait selfies. As for the rear camera, both phones deliver very good daylight performance. In low light, Honor view 10 shoots slightly better images but the Galaxy A8+ isn’t far behind.

Comparing the battery performance of the two, the Honor View 10 has a bigger battery, 3750mAh to be exact, compared to the Galaxy A8+ (3500mAh). They both support fast charging. Battery backup from both phones is comparable.

Verdict

On certain occasions, Samsung Galaxy A8+ seems to be a step ahead of Honor View 10 but this is indeed a very close race.

Who should you buy the Samsung Galaxy A8+?

The Galaxy A8+ comes from the tier-I brand and offers better design, display, software and dual-front camera. Samsung Pay is an added bonus too. If these are the things you value, the Samsung Galaxy A8+ is the phone for you.

Who should you buy the Honor View 10?

The Honor View 10’s biggest advantage is that it’s able to offer a comparable flagship experience for a lower price. It’s also slimmer and slightly faster when it comes to performance.
