While Samsung has brought the Galaxy Note 8 to India, after last month’s global launch, and Xiaomi will do the same with its Mi Mix 2 (already launched in China) in the coming weeks.

Of course, the two phones aren’t exactly in the same league, but can Mi Mix be a commendable low-cost alternative to the big Note? Let’s stack the two against each other to find out.

Design and Build

Both devices happen to boast an amazing design and build quality. The infinity display, bezel-less screen, and sleek design work well for both the smartphones.

Looking at the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 first, the phone sports a metal side frame encased in Corning Gorilla Glass 5.0 from the front as well as the back. The corners on Note 8 are more square than round and up front, the display is surrounded by minimal bezels. The back of the phone has got dual-optics, LED flash and Fingerprint sensor.

Moving over to Mi Mix 2, the phone eliminates the top bezel and the display runs from edge to edge. This necessitates the front-camera to be shifted at the bottom of the screen, and the normal earpiece speaker to be replaced by “piezoelectric speaker”. The ceramic body at the back has got a rear camera, LED flash and fingerprint sensor.

If you ask us, we would rate Galaxy Note 8 design better than the Mi Mix 2. The curved display, large screen size, and metal body all add up to the premium feel of the phone. The only downside of Galaxy Note 8 is its awkwardly placed fingerprint sensor, which some time will need you to stretch your muscle in order to access it.

Display

One thing that the Samsung devices are popular for are their AMOLED displays. Samsung uses the same display on the Galaxy Note 8. The phone boasts an 18.5:9 aspect ratio, 6.33-inch Quad HD+ (2960 x 1440) display.

On the other hand, the Mi Mix 2 has got an 18:9, 5.99-inch full HD (1080p) display. What is noteworthy here is that the phone uses a full vision display, which runs all the way from top to bottom.

Without any argument, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has got a better display than the Mi Mix 2 if you go into nuances. But if it’s only the bezel-less experience that you crave for, then yes, the Mi Mix 2 can satiate your lust as well.

Performance and Software

Let’s check out the immunity on both the phones.

There isn’t much to compare in this regards, as both phones deploy the best in-class chipset under the hood. Both, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, are powered by Snapdragon 835 processor, with Adreno 540 GPU.

In India, Samsung is using the Exynos 8895 chipset which is equally competent for all practical purposes. The Galaxy Note 8 comes with 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM, whereas the Mi Mix 2 comes in 6GB/8GB RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB ROM.

As far as the software goes, the Galaxy Note 8 runs on Android Nougat (7.1) integrated with company’s Experience UX 8.5 out of the box. On the other hand, the Mi Mix 2 boots on the MIUI 9 based Android Nougat (7.1.1).

Camera and Battery

This is where you are likely to notice a significant practical usage difference.

Listing down the specs first, the Galaxy Note 8 comes with 12MP sensor with wide angle lens and f/1.7 aperture + 12MP sensor with a telephoto lens and f/2.4 aperture that offers up to 2X optical zoom at the back, up front it has an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with auto-focus setting.

In contrast to this, the Mi Mix 2 comes with 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor along with a 4-axis optical image stabilization on the rear, and an 8MP selfie shooter on the front.

However, owing to the dual-optics on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the Samsung’s Note 8 wins the race. The camera lives truly up to its spirit and it delivers the quality images in true colors.

The battery on Mi Mix 2 is a tad bigger than that on Note 8. The Galaxy Note 8 extracts its power from 3300mAh fast charging battery that also supports wireless charging, whereas Mi Mix 2 houses a 3400mAh battery with turbo charging support.
