Design and Display

Question: How is the Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro design?

Answer: Samsung hasn’t upgraded the design compared to the last iteration, and some refreshing design changes that we recently saw on Galaxy J2 are missing here. There are no design frills to cherish, but it isn’t a hideous phone either. If you haven’t used a budget Samsung phone for a while, the Galaxy On7 Pro might very well look appealing.

Galaxy On7 Pro (1)

Question: How is the build quality of the Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: There are no flexes or creeks on the device and it feels pretty solid. The glossy side edges tend to make it slippery. The chrome lining around the display glass is susceptible to scratches so you are advised to invest in good quality case as soon as possible.

Question: Are the capacitive keys on Galaxy On7 Pro backlit?

Answer:  No. They are not.

Question: How is the display of Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer:  Samsung is continuing with a TFT display panel for its ‘On’ series. The colors are a bit washed out, and color temperature is cold. Unlike Samsung’s AMOLED display phones, the software doesn’t let you change color temperature either. Other than that there isn’t much reason to complain. The display is sharp and quite legible outdoors.

Galaxy On7 Pro (3)

Question: How is the outdoor visibility? Does the Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: outdoor visibility wasn’t a problem after the Outdoor mode was checked. There is no ambient light sensor, and thus you will have to manually toggle brightness when you step outdoors.

Question: Does the Galaxy On7 Pro display has gorilla glass protection?

Answer: No. Samsung hasn’t provided any scratch resistant layer on the display.

Performance and Storage

Question: How much internal storage space is free on Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: Out of 16GB, 10.3GB is available for users.

Question: How much RAM is free on Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: 1.1GB at first boot

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Pro support microSD card? Can Apps be moved to SD card on Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: Yes. Apps and parts of apps can be transferred to SD card. Pre-installed apps cannot be transferred to SD card.

Galaxy On7 Pro (6)

Question: Does Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro support Adoptable storage?

Answer: No, it doesn’t.

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Pro support USB OTG?

Answer: Yes, USB OTG is supported

Question: Does Samsung Galaxy On7 Pro has a fingerprint sensor?

Answer: No. The Fingerprint sensor is missing.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: The entry-level Snapdragon 410 which Samsung relies on isn’t blazing fast, but it’s still good enough to get the job done. Apps take their sweet time loading and graphic intensive games aren’t that smooth. If you are a basic or moderate user not much into heavy gaming, the On7 Pro should feel adequate.

Question: What are benchmark scores of Galaxy On7 Pro?

Answer: Here are some benchmark scores.

Benchmark Standards scores
AnTuTu 27792
Vellamo (browser, Metal, Multicore) 2087, 1018, 1101
Nenamarks2 53.7 fps
Quadrant 13501
Geekbench3 (Single core, Multi-color) 457, 1288

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Pro has heating issues?

Answer: No, it doesn’t.

Question: Does Galaxy On7 Pro support Google cardboard and other VR Apps?

Answer: Nope. The not so curious case of missing gyroscope.

Camera

Galaxy On7 Pro (7)

Question: How is the Galaxy On7 Pro camera quality?

Answer: Camera quality on On7 Pro is pretty decent when compared to other smartphones in this price range. Shots taken outdoor are mostly accurate (save for some overexposed sky now and then). In low light, some noise creeps in but the color reproduction is fairly accurate.

The camera software offers a pro mode and a few other options, but they don’t work as they should. The On7 Pro can capture 1080p videos as well. Selfies clicked from front camera outdoors are of good quality. In low lighting, selfie camera performance dwindles

Software

Question: How is the software on the new Galaxy On7?

Answer: The handset is running on latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow based TouchWiz UI. The software experience isn’t overwhelming with customization options, which is a good thing.

The software ships with Microsoft, Google and Samsung’s own apps. The On7 Pro is shipping with June security patch and future security patches will also be pushed via OTA updates. Software features like UDS and SBike mode are part of the package as well. It’s the same familiar TouchWiz UI, nothing radical here.

Question: Does the Galaxy On7 Pro support Gestures?

Answer: You can double press the home button to quick-launch the camera app.

Question: Does the Galaxy On7 Pro support double tap to wake feature?

Answer- No. It doesn’t.

Conclusion

Samsung is still skimping on sensors and other basic hardware which is bound to be off-putting for people who put weight on specifications. On the plus side, the latest software and decent camera performance make the overall experience adequate for first-time buyers who value Samsung branding and after sales support. We do wish Samsung had put in some more effort, especially since the ‘On’ series is supposed to compete in the online realms.

No you can’t use portable storage as internal storage on this phone. As far as Nougat update is concern, it is very unlikely to happen anytime soon.

Nice article. One doubt- I think apps cannot be moved to the SD memory card (Ref “performance and memory” section of the article). I own a On7 and after update to android 6 Marshmallow, I cannot move any app to the SD card. Vipul
