The next big thing for Google Assistant is underway. The search-engine giant is set to introduce its Assistant in Smart Displays, which is basically a Google Assistant powered speaker with a Screen – just like the Amazon’s Echo Show.

This will add another dimension to how you interact with Home devices, and make them a lot more useful.

“Smart displays from JBL, Lenovo, LG (all based on the Qualcomm SD624 Home Hub Platform) and Sony (based on the MediaTek MT8173 SoM) will be available later this year,” Google wrote on its blog. In fact, Lenovo Smart Display is already official.

How is Smart Displays Different from Smart Speakers?

Google didn’t reveal the full technical details of the smart displays, but the video showed that it is going to be a display slapped on to a speaker. This will allow you to watch videos on YouTube, make a video call with Google Duo, find photos from Google Photos and more. You can also get recommendations for your favourite content, right on the home screen.

The Google Assistant interface runs on top of Android Things, the company’s version of Android designed for Internet-Of-Things (IoT) devices. The feature gives you an easy, hands-free way to control your home, whether it’s helping you dim the lights from the comfort of your couch or play your dinner party playlist. It’s already lending a helping hand to speakers like Google Home, Mini and Max.

Google also announced its plan to expand the Google Assistant feature to tons of third-party speakers. “We’re announcing that the Assistant is coming to new voice-activated speakers from Altec Lansing, Anker Innovations, Bang & Olufsen, Braven, iHome, JBL, Jensen, LG, Klipsch, Knit Audio, Memorex, RIVA Audio and SōLIS,” Google blog further added.
