Samsung today launched its second Tizen smartphone, the Z3 in India, which will be selling for 8,490 INR. Many of you might be thinking that OS wars are already over with Google and Apple emerging as clear winners. Then what motivation does Samsung has for pushing Tizen?

Tizen-in-the-Big-Picture

Nope, Samsung is not flogging a dead horse

Samsung is betting big on Tizen OS for Internet of Things (IoT). Extension of Google’s Android dominance to Android Auto, Android TV, Android Wear, or perhaps Android Fridge, Android Washing Machine, etc. in future  (Just kidding) is threatening, to say the least, for Samsung.

Strategy is to gain market share

In order to break free from shackles of Google tyranny, it’s imperative that Samsung invest in Tizen and increases the market share of Tizen running IoT smart devices. At the start of 2015, Samsung announced that all Samsung smart devices will be running TizenOS this year.

Last year, Samsung sold over 665 million smart devices, and if we have the same number of Tizen running smart TVs, ACs and other IoT devices by the end of this year, Samsung will have a significant lead, which might save it dire struggle for every inch of market share later.

Samsung selling Tizen Smartphones at the lowest end of the spectrum makes absolute sense too

If Samsung Z1 were a flagship phone, it wouldn’t have found many takers. Instead, Samsung very cleverly launched it as an entry level phone, where anything with Samsung branding is gold. By June 2015, Samsung had already sold over 1 Million Z1 units in India! Just to put that number in perspective – Motorola has managed to sell total  5.6 million phones on Flipkart since its return to India in early 2014.

Samsung keeps the ball rolling with Z3

While we witness the potential of Tizen OS with Samsung Gear S2 at IFA (It was touted as the best Smartwatch till date by most of tech community), Samsung continues pushing Tizen in smartphone space with Z3.

Z3 combines Samsung’s mastery over AMOLED displays with other non-descript hardware. It remains to be seen how well Samsung’s new OS runs on a rather feeble chipset (1.3 GHz quad-core Spreadtrum processor, 1GB RAM and 8GB internal storage). Take a look at complete Spec-sheet below.

Key Features and Specifications

We are not saying Tizen has got a big chance for surpassing Android and iOS  in smartphone space anytime soon or late, but there is no reason for anyone to surrender just yet, without a fight in the IoT warfare.
