2017 has been a phenomenal year for smartphones. We saw some serious development in the way they look – 18:9 screens and metal-glass unibody, the way they act – AR, VR and Machine Learning and the way they capture – dual cameras and portrait mode. Now that the year is done and dusted, we look forward to 2018 and see what all it has for our handsets. Although it is too early to make a call on a field which anything but unpredictable, yet there are a couple of things, we are sure to follow the next year’s flagship smartphones. In 2018, all top-tier flagship phones will have the brain of Qualcomm’s newest processor, Snapdragon 845.
Snapdragon 845 vs Snapdragon 835: What has changed?
The Snapdragon 845 is the Android industry’s most advanced processor, which succeeds this year 835 processor. Some major updates include:
- According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 845 is 25% faster than its predecessor Snapdragon 835.
- The new chipset will improve the battery life by up to 30%.
- Snapdragon 845 is said to have a separate ‘Secure Processing Unit’ that will store biometrics scans in order to make devices more secure.
- The new Snapdragon 845 packs Kryo 385 Gold cores clocked at 2.8 GHz and four Kyro 385 Silver cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. The processor is integrated with Adreno 640 GPU.
- The 845 chipset will support up to 4K Ultra HD video capture @ 60fps.
5 Smartphones that will rock Snapdragon 845 in 2018
Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+
South Korean major’s next flagship smartphone Galaxy S9 and S9+ are destined to be the first ones to taste Snapdragon 845 chipset. But the variants launched in India are likely to come with comparable Exonyms chips. The actual launch of the Galaxy S9 and S9+ is expected in March 2018.
Apart from the latest processor, the Galaxy S9s could come with a screen-to-body ratio as high as 90 percent – compared to 84% screen ratio on Galaxy S8, an improved iris sensor to take on Apple’s face ID, and a single rear optics with bokeh feature and slow-motion videos recording at up to 1000fps.
Xiaomi Mi 7
Next in line for the latest processor is Xiaomi’s flagship device Mi 7. The Chinese smartphone maker made the announcement from the sets of Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 launch event.
We don’t know much about Mi 7 yet, but it is rumored to feature a 6.0-inch Samsung-made AMOLED display with thin bezels and be available in two variants with 6GB and 8GB of RAM. Xiaomi is likely to unveil the device globally at Mobile World Congress. Chances are Xiaomi may tout the Snapdragon 845 on its Mi Mix 3.
OnePlus had a blockbuster year. Their 2017 flagship phones, 5 and 5T, were a killer. One of the many reasons for that was the use of Snapdragon 835, which was the best available option around. OnePlus would obviously stick to the tradition for their 2018 flagship killer, dubbed as ‘OnePlus 6‘.
Talking about OnePlus 6, the handset is expected to include QHD+ full vision display, improved cameras with OIS and 4K recording at 60fps. The phone will come running on Android Oreo out of the box with company’s custom skin applied on top.
LG G7 and G7+
Among the top-tier of flagship smartphones comes LG G7. The phone will be the successor of the South Korean firms G6 and is expected to employ the Snapdragon 845 processor under its hood. Rumour has it that LG could launch the G7 at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January next year.
As far as expected G7 specifications and features are concerned, the in all probability will make debut with an 18:9 OLED display, a Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6GB RAM, and a dual camera setup on the back. The LG G7 is reported to come with an advanced iris scanner for facial recognition.

Sony Xperia XZ2
Last on the list is Sony’s mystery phone that was leaked in the images with the model number ‘H8216’. However, the image didn’t state the name of the device, but many are calling it the successor of last year Xperia XZ, the XZ2. The Sony Xperia XZ2 could be another 2018 flagship phone to come with Snapdragon 845 processor.
Other than the latest processor, the Xperia XZ2 will come equipped with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage, according to the leaks. The phone will have a dedicated support for microSD card. It will have dual 12MP optics on the rear and a 15-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture up front.
Best phones with Snapdragon 845 to launch in 2018
The Snapdragon 845 will certainly be the first choice for flagship phones next year. The next generation flagships like ZTE Nubia Z18, LG V40, Pixel 3 devices, Note 9, and several others are likely to employ it.
