No it’s not a fiction neither I am drunk and there is a good chance that soon you will have a sci-fi movie like smartphone in your hands as flexible as Shakira’s moves. You don’t trust my words? I know, and I don’t hold that against you as this is something we have been hearing for some time now and the promised Flexible handset is long overdue. However, this is not another technological snake oil.

Thanks to Queen’s University Human Media Lab, Flexible mobile phone could see the light pretty soon, ie if their research is something to go by. The Queen’s University researchers have created a new prototype smartphone which is flexible and responds when it is bent or twisted. See the prototype in action below.

The researchers have sourced LG’s Flexible OLED touch screen display which has 720P HD resolution and features in-built haptic feedback motor on the rear side. This flexible device comes with custom drivers tucked in a system-on-chip also known as ReFlex and runs on Android 4.4 Kitkat (Yeah, the irony of it).

“This represents a completely new way of physical interaction with flexible smartphones” says Roel Vertegaal (School of Computing), director of the Human Media Lab at Queen’s University, in a press statement.

“When this smartphone is bent down on the right, pages flip through the fingers from right to left, just like they would in a book. More extreme bends speed up the page flips. Users can feel the sensation of the page moving through their fingertips via a detailed vibration of the phone. This allows eyes-free navigation, making it easier for users to keep track of where they are in a document.”

All the technical details about the project are listed in this 12-page long document.
