The next generation USB standard, the USB 3.2 will double data transfer speed compared to USB 3.1 for Type-C cables. Using multi-lane operation, the USB Type-C cables adhering to USB 3.1 1st generation and USB 3.1 2nd Generation standard will be able to transfer data at double the speed, i.e. 10Gbps and 20 Gbps, respectively.

The announcement came from the USB 3.0 promoter group that comprises of Apple, HP, Intel, Microsoft, Renesas Electronics, ST Microelectronics and Texas Instruments.

“For example, a USB 3.2 host connected to a USB 3.2 storage device will now be capable of realizing over 2 GB/sec data transfer performance over an existing USB Type-C cable that is certified for SuperSpeed USB 10 Gbps,” quoted the group.

High speeds will, however, be realized only when there is the new USB 3.2 port on both ends of the cable. And also if you are using USB certified cables, that aren’t easy to come by.

The full spec sheet of the USB 3.2 will be released at the USB Developer Days North America event in September and that’s also when the USB promoter group will confirm the upper 20Gbps cap. This could mean that the new devices with USB 3.2 won’t be out until 2019. And that’s when you will be able to avail these fast speeds.

Key Features: USB 3.2 VS USB 3.1 – What has changed?

  • New USB 3.2 standard will facilitate double data transfer speeds.
  • It will also be backward compatible with existing Type-C cables
  • If you have USB 3.1 First Generation Type-C cable, transfer speed will increase from 5Gbps to 10 Gbps.
  • With USB 3.1 2nd Gen Type-C cables, transfer speed is likely to increase from 10Gbps to 20Gbps
  • You will need to have USB 3.2 ports on both devices that are exchanging data though, and that is unlikely to happen before later 2018 or early 2019.
