Vivo’s next generation selfie expert, V7 Plus, is alive and kicking, and even though Vivo has made quite a few upgrades, the spec-sheet might not feel entirely convincing. In fact, the last generation dual camera flagship, Vivo V5 Plus (Review), that retails for almost the same price, isn’t very far off and could serve as an alternative. So, let’s compare the two to understand Vivo’s ‘Perfect Selfie’ evolution.

Design and Display

While the Vivo V5 Plus was an absolutely delectable, the V7 Plus has a few more modern perks to offer. The handset includes a full View 18:9 display. Which is to say that Vivo has managed to cram a 6-inch display in a near 5.5-inch phone body, without compromising on ergonomics.

This was made possible because of the swanky 18:9 display and the staggering 84-percent screen to body ratio (or extremely narrow bezels around the display). So, the display feels a lot more enchanting and immersive and should provide for a more awesome multimedia and gaming experience.

However, the display has just HD resolution. In comparison, the V5 Plus comes with a regular 16:9 but  Full HD screen housed in a gorgeous, slimmer and relatively compact full metal body. The color calibration and white point aren’t very different on both screens. Perhaps generic buyers who’d buy it from an offline store won’t find the HD resolution to be a deal breaker (HD on a 6-inch screen isn’t sharp but, if done right, it’s still something you can live with).

Another casualty of the full view display (and this is subjective) is that the fingerprint sensor had to be moved to the rear. We, for one, would prefer the fast front mounted one on the V5 Plus.

Both phones feel impressive in hands, but yes, the V7 Plus feels better. Only if Vivo had used a higher resolution screen.

Performance and Software – Snapdragon 625 vs Snapdragon 450

A 400 series chipset on the V7 plus is a downgrade from the Snapdragon 625 used on the V5 Plus. At the same time, it must be mentioned that we didn’t notice much difference in the real world usage.

The Snapdragon 450 is a major upgrade to Qualcomm’s 400 series. It is based on the same 14nm fabrication process as Snapdragon 625, has the same Modem, and even the same GPU. The only difference is in clock frequency (2.0GHz vs 1.8GHz) and that isn’t very noticeable in day to day usage.

Both phones have 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The software skin running on both phones is also same, however, the V7 Plus has Android Nougat as base software (compared to Android Marshmallow on V5 Plus). Since Funtouch OS is a heavily customized skin, the base Android version won’t make much of a difference (unless you like experimenting with apps).

All said and done,, there isn’t much to choose from in terms of performance and software between the two phones.

Camera and Battery

On the V5 Plus, you get two selfie cameras (20MP + 8MP) that can be used to add background blur to your selfies. The handset has a 20MP primary selfie shooter aided by Moonlight flash and a Beautify mode.

In comparison, the Vivo V7 Plus has a more detailed 24MP resolution and shifts and relies on software for Bokeh effect.

Both phones can shoot amazing selfies in good lighting. The rear camera hardware and performance is same on both phones.

The battery capacities on both phones are identical too, but with a lower resolution display and slightly lower clocked SoC, the V7 Plus battery should last a tad longer.

Verdict

In the end, the choice between the two boils down to the type of display you’d prefer. The V7 Plus has a trendy 18:9 full view panel with extremely narrow bezels on all sides, but the resolution is HD. The V5 Plus has the customary 16:9 panel but with a sharper full HD resolution.

If you don’t want to compromise with display resolution and would prefer the front fingerprint sensor placement any day, you could consider choosing the V5 Plus over V7 Plus.
