Vivo has three selfie-first phones priced under 20,000 INR and all of three rely on the same camera hardware and software. Other aspects aren’t vastly different either. You get the same chipset, same software, nearly identical design and same battery capacity. But, at the same time, if you are confined by a budget, you could choose the suitable option of the three – Vivo Y66, Vivo V5, and Vivo V5s – by letting go of a few features. Let’s answer all Vivo Y66 queries to know if it’s a reasonable compromise over its two elder siblings.

Design and Display

Question: How is the Vivo Y66 design?

Answer: The Vivo Y66 looks like any other Vivo phone you might have spotted this year. It’s slim and has 2.5D glass on the front with a thin chrome lining separating it from the neat metal-finish back cover.

The navigation buttons are present on the bottom bezel and aren’t backlit. The power button and volume rocker are within reach when you hold Y66 in one hand, and have good travel.

Question: How is the build quality of the Vivo Y66?

Answer: The Y66 tries to masquerade as standard metal unibody phone but the material used is actually plastic. Vivo even adds antenna bands to adhere to the conventional metal unibody template, which wasn’t actually necessary since plastic wouldn’t have interfered with the signals anyways.

It’s good quality matte finish plastic though and thus we don’t mind it all. The phone has substantial heft and feels pretty solid. As always, Vivo bundles a TPU case in the box.

Question: Are the capacitive keys on Vivo Y66 backlit?

Answer:  No.

Question: How is the display of Vivo Y66?

Answer:  Vivo Y66 comes with a 720p HD resolution, and if you are used to Full HD screens, the one on the Y66 will invariably feel soft. First time user, who will be buying this phone from offline retail stores might not mind the resolution, though.

The display shows a wide dynamic range and fairly high contrast, but the color temperature leans towards the colder side of the spectrum. You can use a Cool-Warm slider under display settings to replace blue tint with a yellow one, but that doesn’t work very effectively.

Vivo has added an eye-protection mode which you must use at night times. You can also program it to turn on during a specific time interval.

Question: How is the outdoor visibility? Does the Vivo Y66 has the option for automatic brightness?

Answer: Yes, auto brightness works fine. The display is bright enough to be usable under direct sunlight.

Question: Does the Vivo Y66 display has Gorilla glass protection?

Answer: No. But a good quality scratch guard comes preinstalled on the display and serves the purpose well.

Performance and Storage

Question: How much internal storage space is free on Vivo Y66?

Answer: Out of 32GB, about 22GB is available for users.

Question: How much RAM is free on Vivo Y66?

Answer: The phone consistently has around 1GB of RAM free at the user end. We didn’t face any issue with multitasking.

Question: Does Vivo Y66s support microSD card? Can Apps be moved to SD card?

Answer: Yes, the second SIM card slot can accept up to 256GB microSD storage. No, apps can’t be moved to external storage.

Question: Does Vivo Y66s support Adoptable storage?

Answer: No, it doesn’t.

Question: Does Vivo Y66 support USB OTG?

Answer: Yes, USB OTG is supported.

Question: Does Vivo Y66 has a fingerprint sensor?

Answer: No. And that is its biggest shortcoming.

Question: How is the day-to-day or general performance? How is gaming performance of Vivo Y66?

Answer: Vivo Y66 is powered by MediaTek MT6750 octa-core – a chip that Vivo can control well. This isn’t the fastest SoC around, but is appropriately tuned with Vivo’s software, is power efficient and doesn’t heat. And overall, that results in consistent performance. That is to say that apps and web pages do take their sweet time loading, but it doesn’t stutter and leave you hanging in midair or behave in an erratic manner every now and then. All sensors work well too.

Performance shouldn’t be an issue if you aren’t particularly interested in playing high-end games.

Question: Does Vivo Y66 has heating issues?

Answer: No, it doesn’t.

Question: Does Vivo Y66 support Google cardboard and other VR Apps?

Answer: Yes, it does.

Camera

Question: How is the Vivo Y66 camera quality?

Answer: The images from the 13MP selfie camera on the Vivo Y66 look sharp and accurate, but yes, the lack of details is apparent when you examine them on a bigger display. The dynamic range and metering accuracy are fairly standard for the price. If you have adequate light, images will look natural, but in low light software aggressively sharpens the image to avoid noise which results in poor details.

The interesting part is the Vivo camera app that has quite a few shooting modes, our favorite being the elaborate professional mode.

The 16MP selfie camera on the phone is the same module you would find on Vivo V5 and Vivo V5s. This includes a 20MP Sony sensor, moonlight soft flash, and f/2.0 aperture optics. It also benefits from Beautify mode and HDR mode.

The HDR mode takes a couple more seconds to shoot and process but it does enhance selfies clicked in low light. If you are a selfie enthusiast, this is one of the better selfie cameras you can get for under 15,000

Question: How well does the HDR Mode and Pro Mode work on the Vivo Y66 camera?

Answer: Both the HDR and Professional mode on Vivo Y66 work well.

Question: Can the Vivo Y66 shoot 4K videos?

Answer: No, it can’t.

Question: Can you record slow-motion videos on Vivo Y66?

Answer: Yes, you can shoot decent quality slow motion videos as well.

Software

Question: How is the software on the Vivo Y66?

Answer: The Funtouch OS on Vivo Y66 is based on Android Marshmallow and is a tad too inspired by iOS. Though it has all controls we need, most of them in the right place, we still believe that it could use a facelift.

The control center can be conveniently accessed by swiping up from the bottom, the phone supports gestures and you can also split the screen in two to attend to chats and messages while watching a video.

There are plenty of customization options and the UI is well optimized to be lenient on system resources.

Question: Does the Vivo Y66 support Gestures?

Answer: Yes, it does.

Question: Does the Vivo Y66 support double tap to wake feature?

Answer- No.

Question: Will Vivo Y66 get Android Nougat or Android O update?

Answer: Android version update is not likely. If you want to have first-row access to new features that Google adds to Android, this isn’t the phone for you.

Miscellaneous

Question: What kind of SIM cards does Vivo Y66 support?

Answer: The handset accepts one Nano (SIM 2) and one Micro SIM. The SIM tray is hybrid.

Question: What comes inside the box?

Answer: Inside the box, you will find a 1A -5V charger, a USB Type-A Cable, decent headphones, a TPU case, and paperwork.

Question: How is the call quality on Vivo Y66?

Answer: During our time with the Y66, the call quality was reasonable (not stellar though).

Question: Does Vivo Y66 support Reliance Jio SIM cards/ 4G VoLTE?

Answer: Yes. 4G VoLTE works fine.

Question: How is the Battery backup on Vivo Y66?

Answer: The battery backup is surprisingly quite good. With data on, we could easily stretch the battery over one and a half day with low to moderate usage.

That’s because the standby time is pretty good. Battery drains fast with gaming.

Question: Does Vivo Y66 support fast charging?

Answer: No, charging using the inbox charger is slow. With a 2A adapter, charging is relatively faster.

Question: What are the sensors present on Vivo Y66?

Answer: All major sensors are included.

Question: How loud is the loudspeaker on Vivo Y66?

Answer: The HiFi audio out quality and loudspeaker loudness are above average.

Conclusion

The Vivo Y66 is meant for basic users who want to jump on the selfie bandwagon and wouldn’t mind saving a few more bucks by forgoing the fingerprint sensor. If you are willing to spend a bit more, Vivo V5s and Vivo V5 feel like better options, simply because of their fast fingerprint readers.
