Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is all set to do away with Snapdragon (or MediaTek) chipsets and instead bring out its own in-house SoC called Pinecone, which it is reportedly working on.

Amongst the first smartphones to feature the same would be the Mi 5C which is deemed to be out soon (in a month or two). Also, it is expected that one of the variants of Mi 6, which is also slated to be unveiled around the same time as the former, could also feature Xiaomi’s very own Pinecone SoC.

Reportedly working in tandem with a company called Beijing Pinecone Electronics for the development of the said chipset, the Chinese company is set to follow the lead of other companies that make their own processors, such as Samsung (Exynos) and Huawei (Kirin).

It is worth mentioning here that Beijing Pinecone Electronics is an IT company based in Beijing and provides various digital media solutions.

One of the major reasons behind Xiaomi moving away from the Qualcomm-owned processors could be attributed to the undependable availability of the company’s Snapdragon 835 chipset.

Earlier, there were reports coming in that accused Samsung of hoarding a lion’s share of the supply of the said processor for its upcoming flagships, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, making it highly unlikely for the other companies to feature it until the phones came out.

This is being said to be the detrimental reason behind Xiaomi’s switch, which made the company make its own set of chipsets.

Apart from that, the official Pinecone SoC website, as well as its official Weibo page went live a few days ago, pointing towards a launch soon.
