Design and Display

Each one of the two gigantic phones features a metal unibody with a matte finishing at the back, as well as have a 2.5D curved glass lain on the top. The Mi Max 2 is undoubtedly bigger, but is also thinner than its Samsung counterpart (7.6mm to 8.1mm), even though it houses a much larger battery.

Standing at 6.44-inches, the Mi Max 2 has the same display size as the original Mi Max, but makes a few changes on the design front, including the addition of the 2.5D glass, rounded edges, as well as a slimmer waistline. All in all, what we have is a much improved, premium looking smartphone.

The On Max isn’t that far behind (at least design-wise), and comes bearing a very J7 Max-ish design layout, we we do not mind at all, as the metal unibody, front-mounted fingerprint scanner, and rounded edges lend it the premium feel (and looks), it needs, especially when it is competing against the Mi Max 2.

Both phones bear the same Full HD (1920 x1080p resolution) screen, but they differ on the types of panels used. While the Mi Max 2 has an IPS LCD, the On Max features a TFT LCD display.

Talking about the display, the pendulum tilts towards On Max when we speak about the sharpness, while it tilts back to the center we compare them on the account of vibrancy in colors, and viewing angles.

Software and Performance

Both the smartphones boot on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat OS, and have their company’s respective skins layered on the top (Xiaomi’s MIUI and Samsung’s Experience).

The Mi Max 2 is the first smartphone from Xiaomi’s arsenal in India to sport a stable version of the MIUI (version 8.5 in this case), which is known to have some nifty features at hand (although it does tend to get a little heavy) like the One Handed Usage option (very useful, since it is a 6.44-inch display you are dealing with), dual apps, scrolling screenshots, et al.

The On Max’s Experience UI, on the other hand, is relatively lighter and more intuitive. Features like game launcher, social camera, multi-window, dual apps, and SOS Panic Mode are certainly useful to end user.

Another factor that works in the favor of the On Max is that it comes featuring the Samsung Pay Mini mobile transaction application.

On the hardware side of the things, we have Snapdragon 625 and MediTek Helio P25 Lite chipsets propelling the Mi Max 2 and the On Max, respectively.

It is worthwhile to mention here that both these mid budget chipset are powerful enough to take care of needs of an average consumer. In our first-hand experience, tells us that both phones manage almost everything efficiently which showing any jitteriness.

Camera and Battery

In terms of the primary camera, both the phones stand on near-equal turf, with one (Mi Max 2) sporting a 12MP snapper, and the other one coming in with a 13MP one, on the back.

The Mi Max 2’s back camera module has features like f/2.2 aperture and 1.25-micron pixel size, and keeping in mind the performance of its predecessor, we might as well deem its optical capacity to be on par with the original Mi Max.

The On Max has a 13MP rear camera with features that include a f/1.7 aperture, making it only the second smartphone in its category to do so. The rear camera offers better credentials for low light photography as compared to the Mi Max 2. On the broad day light, both rear shooters manage to capture good clicks.

Up front, the Mi Max 2 wins the war on megapixel count but the results are not as drastic as it should have been considering the On Max only features a subdued 5-megapixel shooter.

What else works in Samsung On Max favour in camera section, is the addition of a feature called the Social Camera, that allows the users to upload their pictures directly to different social media sites by displaying them on the viewfinder of the camera app itself.

Now, while the selfie cam is one segment, where one of the phones takes a considerable lead, it is not the only one.

As far as the battery of the two is concerned, the Mi Max 2 takes a massive lead over the On Max, largely thanks to its mammoth 5,300mAh power unit (the On max has a relatively smaller 3,300mAh one). That also has supports for QuckCharge 3.0, is an added bonus.
