As expected, Xiaomi today officially launched three variants of  Redmi 4 in India priced between 6,999 and 10,999 INR. The next Redmi phone will further strengthen Chinese manufacturers grip in the under 10,000 INR price segment, where all its recent efforts have been pouring in.

As far as the design goes, there isn’t any radical difference between the new Redmi 4 and other Xiaomi phones that you must have come across in the last year. There is metal on the rear adjoined by plastic trimmings on top and bottom, rounded corners, and 2.5D glass layered on the front. The handset is 8.65mm thick, weighs 150 grams and will be available in Black and Gold color options.

On the inside, the new Xiaomi Redmi 4 includes a 5-inch HD display and is powered by 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 435 processor. It will be available in 3 variants with 2GB RAM/ 16GB storage, 3GB RAM/ 32GB storage, 4GB/ 64GB storage will be available at 6,999 INR, 8,999 INR and 10,999 INR, respectively.

For photography, the Redmi 4 includes the standard 13MP rear with PDAF and 5MP front shooter with “Pro Beautify mode”. The software is MIUI 8.0 and is bound to draw some resentment for not being the latest Android flavor (though, in our opinion, it doesn’t make much of a difference).

Xiaomi estimates this and thus allows users to switch to Android N preview out of the box till it’s ready to roll out a stable Android Nougat based build.

Xiaomi isn’t neglecting battery this time either. The 4100mAh battery on Redmi 4 should ensure a decent mileage for all classes of users. Other notable features include 4G VoLTE support, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, WiFi, regular USB Type-A port, Bluetooth, and GPS.

All said and done, the Redmi 4 isn’t a major upgrade over Redmi 3s. The biggest change is that it now has a 2.5D glass layered on the front that enhances its looks.

Xiaomi started the event by explaining that they are doubling their efforts to make their phones readily available to online consumers. The company is planning to open 100 Mi Home stores in India in the next two years and these stores will never be “out of stock”.
