Xiaomi Redmi 5, Redmi 5 Plus With 18:9 Displays and full metal bodies Announced

Finally, after featuring in numerous leaks and Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus went official today in China. Interestingly, Xiaomi thanked its Indian fans for their support at the start of its event in its motherland.

Xiaomi with these Redmi 4 successors has revamped its design language for budget series as both these devices come with full-screen displays and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Most of the details of devices were already in public domain thanks to various leaks. Both these devices boast off a metal unibody build with smooth rounded corners. Both feature a fingerprint sensor on the rear and will be running on Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 9.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 features and Highlights

As we reported in the past, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 features a near bezel-less 5.7-inch display with HD+ resolution an 18:9 aspect ratio. Apart from the trendy display, another key highlight of its design is the systemically placed rear camera, fingerprint sensor and microUSB port.

In terms of innards, the Redmi 5 employs a 14nm FinFET technology based octa-core Snapdragon 450 chipset clocked at 1.8GHz. The system-on-chip is paired with Adreno 506 GPU. Xiaomi is offering the Redmi 5 in a configuration of 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM and 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM.

For shutterbug, the Redmi 5 comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with 1.25-micron pixels whereas up front it packs a 5-megapixel selfie camera with Beautify 3.0 features. The phone will draw juice from a 3300mAh battery, which as per the company will last for 12 days of standby mode.

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus features and Highlights

The Redmi 5 ‘Plus’ sibling comes with even narrower bezels on the sides. The phone comes with a large 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with 1080×2160 resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. The Plus version of Redmi 5 houses a 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor alongside Adreno 506 GPU. Once again Xiaomi is offering its new device in multiple configurations. The base variant comes with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage while top variant comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard storage.

Optics of the Redmi 5 Plus is exactly same as the Redmi 5. It too comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel selfie camera. It packs a much capacious battery at 4000mAh and it can offer up to 17 days of standby time, as per the company.

Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus price and availability

The Redmi 5 price in China starts at CNY 799 (which is roughly about Rs 7,800) for the 2GB + 16GB variant. The 3GB + 32GB Redmi 5 is priced at CNY 899 (approx Rs 8,800). The is made available in Black, Blue, Gold and Pink hues.

The Redmi 5 Plus, on the other hand, base variant of (3GB + 32GB) is retailing at CNY 999 (almost Rs. 9,800 in conversion) and top variant with 4GB RAM+ 64GB storage comes for CNY 1299 (approx Rs 12,700). At this price, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are among the cheapest smartphones with 18:9 display on the market. Currently, the phone is only launched in China and its first sale will be held on December 12. The company is yet to launch the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus in India.
