Xolo Era 3X Review: Design, Build, and Display

The Era 3X doesn’t stray very far from what we are used to seeing from Xolo. It’s a compact and chunky phone with a 5-inch display. The plastic back cover curves towards the edges to facilitate a better grip. Underneath it, you will find a removable 3000mAh battery, 2 nano-SIM card slots, and a dedicated MicroSD card slot.

The display on the front is surrounded by substantial bezels on all sides and is layered with a 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3. The Navigation bar below it includes silver-coated capacitive keys. The bottom edge gets the mono speaker (concealed beneath dual speaker grills) and regular micro USB port (OTG supported) and the 3.5mm audio jack is present up top.

The 5-inch HD display is reasonably sharp. The dynamic range and contrast and the quality of the display, in general, is pretty standard.

Xolo Era 3X Review: Performance and software

The handset is powered by 1.25GHz MediaTek MT6737 chipset. This is an inherently slow chipset (when pitched against Snapdragon options) and is meant for most basic of users. The 3GB RAM gives some assurance of durable performance in the long run, but the 16GB storage, of which around 10GB is free at the user end, is certainly a limiting factor. Anyways, you get the option to plug in the microSD card and shift some of your data and media (not apps) to secondary storage.

The software on the phone is very close to stock Android. Xolo has preloaded a bunch of apps on the phone, but you can uninstall them if you don’t need them. The software is light and efficient. We didn’t experience any UI lag on the phone.

Xolo Era 3X Review: Camera

Xolo projects Era 3X as a selfie-first phone and these claims are supported by the high-resolution selfie sensor (13MP) and the LED flash up front. In proper lighting, we managed to shoot some detailed images from the front camera, but the camera struggles with metering. The dynamic range and contrast are average too.

The rear 13MP camera is also a fairly standard one. It can shoot workable shots outdoors, but struggles indoors and while shooting close objects. The camera performance isn’t exceptional, but its archrivals don’t have much to offer on the photography front either.

Xolo Era 3X Review: Battery, Audio, and Connectivity

The 3000mAh battery can comfortably last for more than a day with moderate usage. Fast charging isn’t supported though.

The fingerprint sensor on the rear is accessible, fast, and accurate more often than not. The call quality on the phone is good too. The audio output is fairly loud, but the quality isn’t anything to write home about. Again, an acceptable compromise for the price.

Xolo Era 3X Review: Should you buy it?

The Xolo Era 3X strikes as a fairly regular phone. It’s a compact phone that looks decent and has a removable battery. The experience we are getting out of it is at par with what we generally see on affordable phones. If you are a basic user who is limited by a budget or around 8K, you can consider Xolo Era 3X as an option. If you are willing to spend more, you can go for phones like Redmi 4 and Zenfone 4 Selfie.
